Association of the occurrence of some diseases with reproductive performance and milk production of dairy herds in southern Brazil R. Bras. Zootec.
Scheid Filho,Virgilio Balduíno; Schiavon,Raquel Schiavon; Gastal,Gustavo Desire Antunes; Timm,Cláudio Dias; Lucia Jr.,Thomaz.
This study analyzed associations between the occurrence of mastitis, metritis and retained placenta with the reproductive performance and milk production of four Holstein dairy herds of southern Brazil. Calving-to-conception intervals (CCI) and daily milk production were compared across herds, number of artificial inseminations and clinical occurrences and occurrence of mastitis, metritis and retained placenta. The CCI of cows with three or more clinical occurrences was longer than for those with no occurrences, but shorter for cows with retained placenta than for those without it. Cows with clinical mastitis up to 60 days post-partum had shorter CCI than those with mastitis after 60 days. Cows with retained placenta also had higher frequency of metritis....

Biofilm formation by Vibrio parahaemolyticus on different surfaces and its resistance to sodium hypochlorite Ciência Rural
Rosa,Janaina Viana da; Conceição,Natália Volpato da; Conceição,Rita de Cássia dos Santos da; Timm,Cláudio Dias.
ABSTRACT: Vibrio parahaemolyticus is an important pathogen for both fish industry and consumers. It forms biofilm which makes it difficult to eliminate this microorganism using sanitizers. This study aimed to assess biofilm formation on different surfaces and effect of biofilm on resistance to sanitizers. Eight isolates of biofilm-forming V. parahaemolyticus were tested for the ability to form biofilms on a number of surfaces including high density polyethylene, stainless steel, glass, exoskeleton of Farfantepenaeus paulensis (Pink Shrimp), and operculum of Micropogonias furnieri (Whitemouth Croaker). Efficiency of sanitizer sodium hypochlorite against the bacteria was evaluated in the biofilms formed on the surface of the materials used; out the eight...

Inducers and autoinducers on Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium motility, growth and gene expression Ciência Rural
Conceição,Rita de Cássia dos Santos da; Sturbelle,Régis Tuchtenhagen; Timm,Cláudio Dias; Leite,Fábio Pereira Leivas.
Genus Salmonella bacteria are among the major pathogenic microorganisms in food. This bacterium pathogenicity is related to a number of virulence factors, among which its flagella. Flagellum expression is one of the virulence factors modulated by Quorum Sensing. Epinephrine produced by mammals uses the same signaling pathway of the 3 bacteria autoinducer. This study evaluated the effect of molecules inducer (epinephrine) and autoinducers (autoinducer 2 and autoinducer 3) and their association with the motility, growth and expression genes flhC, fliA, fliY, motA, motB e fliC of Salmonella Typhimurium (ST). Initially, ST was inoculated in BHI. Then, motility assays, growth curves and gene expression were performed by testing different concentrations of...
